Community leaders sign agreement outlining campus law enforcement

The Superintendent of the Knox County Schools hosted community and local law enforcement leaders Monday, March 2, 2009 as they met to sign a memorandum of agreement outlining the on campus law enforcement operations and duties of the various agencies.
Joining Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre will Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, Knoxville Chief of Police Sterling Owen, Knox County Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones, Board of Education Chair Indya Kincannon, District Attorney General Randy Nichols, and Knox County Law Director Bill Lockett.
The extensive agreement outlines the on campus duties and responsibilities of the school system, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, and the Knoxville Police Department. The stated goals of the agreement are:
• Establish a positive working relationship in a cooperative effort to prevent juvenile delinquency and assist in student development.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment on campus, which will be conducive to learning.
• Promote positive attitudes regarding the police role in society and to inform students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens.
